Impact of Masaka cooperartive union

With the revival of the union, recent testimonials focus on the renewed hope and positive changes it is bringing to the community.

Improved Farming Practices:

The union is praised for providing training and resources to farmers. This includes distributing high-quality, disease-resistant coffee seedlings and offering education on proper agronomic and post-harvest practices. This support helps farmers improve the quality of their coffee and increase their productivity.

The creation of a Savings and Credit Cooperative (SACCO) is a key point of positive feedback. Farmers are relieved to have a financial facility that offers affordable loans, freeing them from the high-interest rates of private lenders. Additionally, the union’s transparent business transactions have built trust among farmers, who feel confident in supplying their coffee to the union’s modern grading factory.

The union has also been lauded for its specific focus on youth and women. By mobilizing young people to participate in the coffee value chain and providing them with training and access to finance, the union is addressing unemployment and food insecurity in the region.

Development of Financial Services (MUCOFI)

A significant project has been the establishment of Masaka Union Co-operative Financial Services Ltd. (MUCOFI). This financial arm provides a much-needed service to farmers by offering:

🏛️ Governance Structure

The MCU follows a tiered system that ensures the farmers remain the ultimate owners of the union:

  1. Primary Cooperative Societies: These are the local units (over 140 active societies) where individual farmers are members. They aggregate produce and provide local leadership.
  2. Annual General Meeting (AGM): This is the supreme authority. Delegates elected from the primary societies meet to vote on major policies, review financial reports, and elect the Board of Directors.
  3. Board of Directors: A body of elected farmer-representatives who provide strategic oversight and hold the management team accountable.

Current Board Chairperson: Joseph Kavuma Mwanje, who has been instrumental in the union’s recovery and government compensation negotiations

The administration of the Masaka Cooperative Union (MCU) is built on a democratic cooperative model, balancing farmer representation with professional management.
