How Its Work

Here are some of the key projects:

The Masaka Cooperative Union (MCU) has a number of ongoing and future projects aimed at revitalizing its operations and improving the livelihoods of its members.

01

1. Revival of Primary Cooperative Societies

A central focus of the union is to rebuild its network of primary cooperative societies. Before its collapse, MCU had over 250 societies. The administration is working to revive these groups and recruit new ones. The goal is to re-establish a strong base of member farmers to ensure a consistent and large volume of coffee supply. This project involves mobilization efforts and providing incentives to attract farmers back to the cooperative.

02

2. Infrastructure Development

MCU is investing heavily in rebuilding its physical infrastructure. This includes: • Coffee Stores: The union has been constructing new coffee stores in various sub-counties across the Greater Masaka region. These stores enable farmers to collectively bulk their coffee, which helps in securing better prices and maintaining quality. • Coffee Processing Plant: A major project is the construction and equipping of a new, modern coffee processing and grading plant. This factory is a critical step towards adding value to the coffee produced by members and improving the quality of the final product.

3. Masaka Union Cooperative Financial Services (MUCOFI)

This is a significant project that has seen successful implementation. MUCOFI is the union's financial arm, a Savings and Credit Cooperative (SACCO) that provides members with: • Affordable Loans: This project aims to free farmers from the high-interest rates of private lenders by offering low-interest "coffee loans" for farming and personal needs. • Savings: The SACCO encourages a culture of saving among members, helping them to build capital.

4. Hass Avocado Project

To diversify its income and support its members beyond coffee, MCU is venturing into other crops. A notable project is the Kitoma Hass Avocado Project, where a model forest of over 12,000 Hass Avocado trees has been planted. The union plans to produce high-yield, pest-resistant hybrid Hass Avocados.
